Way to create a 'Growth Mindset' Approach in the Classroom
A growth mindset is the belief that abilities can develop through effort, practice, and the right strategies. When students understand that learning is not fixed, they become more willing to take risks, persist through challenges, and view mistakes as part of the learning.

The concept was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck, whose research shows that students who believe their intelligence can grow are more likely to embrace challenge and remain motivated when learning becomes difficult.
In simple terms, students with a fixed mindset often think: “I’m just not good at this.”
Students with a growth mindset think: “I can improve with practice.”

Why Growth Mindset Matters in the Classroom
When growth mindset language becomes part of everyday classroom culture, students begin to:
- Persist when learning feels challenging
- View mistakes as opportunities to learn
- Try new strategies instead of giving up
- Respond more positively to feedback
Bringing Growth Mindset Into Your Classroom
One of the simplest ways to embed growth mindset thinking is through a visible classroom display that reinforces positive learning language.
A growth mindset display can:
- Model the difference between fixed and growth thinking
- Provide language students can use during challenges
- Prompt reflection when mistakes occur
- Reinforce perseverance throughout the year
Embedding growth mindset language through discussion, modelling, and visual reminders helps students see learning as a process. Over time, they begin to replace “I can’t do this” with a far more powerful thought: “I can’t do this yet.”
