When preparing to teach NSW Foundation Style cursive, it is essential to bear in mind that students require consistent practise to develop key writing skills, including efficient pencil grasp, writing posture, and uniform letter formation (NSW Department of Education).
These activities follow the Stage 2, Year 3 (Term 1 and Term 2) instructional sequence for handwriting in NSW.
Beyond Term 2, students are encouraged to consolidate and begin mastering cursive writing (moving away from a focus on correct letter formation, as one has mastered this skill).
This teacher resource includes:
- review of NSW Foundation Handwriting
- introduction of precursive letters (exits and entries)
- revision of precursive letters
- blank handwriting lines
- a-z dotted alphabet
- a-z tracing alphabet
